Arts Department

The English Department is operational since the establishment of the college i.e the year 1971. Initially English was taught as a compulsory subject for first year B.A., B.Com and BSc courses. English as a special subject was introduced in the year 1976. The post-graduate course i.e M.A. English was introduced in 1994. Various steps have been taken to develop the infrastructural facilities of the department. The department runs a vocational course Functional English to increase the employability of the students. This course is operational since 1994.

The department has a well-equipped Soft Skill Training Centre having 35 Lingua Phone machines. In addition, there are 21 computers for developing communication skills of the students. The departmental library is well equipped with reference books and it subscribes to 05 journals related to language, literature and ELT. The courses like Communication Skills in English and Preparation for Competitive Examination are taught under the restructuring programme. The department offers Special Guidance in English for weak students. It also offers a Career Oriented Course in Spoken English. The department runs Remedial and Bridge courses. At present there are five teachers in the department, who are actively engaged in research activities and consultancy, apart from the regular teaching activities.

The department of Geography started since the establishment of the college in 1971. It has a devoted faculty, committed to the high standards of teaching. Both, theory and practical courses are being conducted in the department. The courses belong to either physical or human Geography. As a part of the practical course, the department organizes study tours at different places of Geographical interest in the country. The interdisciplinary courses being taught in the department. The department's commitment to basic and applied teaching encourages students to go for higher education as well as for Rresearch activities. Besides, Geography is one of the major subjects in various competitive examinations and hence, students find it useful to study for the preparation of the same. The department has two well-equipped laboratories and a staff room. Tracing tables, wall maps, surveying instruments, Survey of India toposheets, weather maps, charts, models, weather instruments, computer sets with internet facility and essential furniture is available in the UG and PG laboratories.

The departmental library has one hundred and eighty two books and issues of research journals viz. The Deccan Geographer and Maharashtra Bhoogolshastra Sanshodhan Patrika . The department offers a bachelor degree course (B.A., in Geography) at undergraduate level and master degree course (M.A. in Geography) at post-graduate level. The UG students can choose Geography as a special subject in the Second Year at UG level. Keeping in tune with the changing scenario in the field of education, the department has introduced a Career Oriented Course entitled Certificate Course in Travel and Tourism and Foundation Course in Moral Values. These courses are sponsored by UGC. Along with the conventional methods of teaching, LCD, OHP, geographical models, internet, maps, charts are used for making the teaching more effective. Village survey and industrial visits are organized to provide the practical knowledge to the students. Open discussions and feedbacks from the students provide further scope for upgradation. In addition to class room learning, tours, excursions, library, internet, seminars, guest lectures are the other means of learning in the department. The effective methods like group discussions, seminars, assessment of journals, tests, tutorials and tour reports are helpful to evaluate the students. In all three minor research projects sponsored by BCUD, SPPU, Pune and UGC, New Delhi are completed by the faculty.

Achievements of the Department

• State level seminars entitled, Recent Trends in Travel and Tourism and Resource Management and Sustainable Development (RMSD-2016) were organized by the department.
• Dr. N. M. Patil received a National level Shikshak Ratna Award on 29th May 2017 by Samata Sahitya Academy at Goa.
• Mr. R. S. Pawar is working as ANO, NCC, Maharashtra battalion at Ahmednagar.
• Mr. R. S. Bhadakwad is working as a N.S.S. Programme Officer.
• Dr. Nitinkumar M. Patil has worked as a Student Welfare Officer for six academic years from 2009-10 to 2014-15.
• Dr. D. J. Gadekar is working as an editor of Research Journal.
• Dr. N. M. Patil is elected as a member of Local Management Committee.

The department of Hindi was established in 1971. General Hindi was introduced in 1972. While Hindi as a special subject started in 1973. In 1972, Hindi Language and Literature was introduced at M.A. level. In addition to this, under Pune University,the department offers conventional courses at UG level. The choice-based credit semester system is applied at the PG level. The UG and PG courses are run as per the Pune University norms. The department is progressive as far as the results are considered for the academic year 2016-17. The B.A. result was 85% and M.A. result was 100%.One of the students of the Hindi department, qualified NET in 2013, SET in 2014 and M.Phil. in 2015.

• Miss Puri Savita Babasaheb achieved nineth rank in S. P. Pune University at M.A. Hindi in April 2015.
• Miss Shaikh Afrin Sikandar stood fourth in S. P. Pune University at T.Y.B.A. Hindi in April 2013.
• Miss Pathare Sunita Baban has qualified the State Eligibility Test held in September 2015.
• Mr. Gagare Prakash Bhagvat has qualified the State Eligibility Test held in Deember 2013.
• Our faculties regularly participate and present papers in the International,National,and State level conferences and seminars.
• Every year the department celebrates Hindi Divas (National Language Day) on 14th September.
• The department has also organized National Seminar on 13th to 14th January 2017.
• The student of the Hindi department, Miss.Chaugule Ashwini was selected as the best volunteer of NSS in 2016.

Infrastructure

The department of Hindi is located in the Main Building of the college, measuring 11.17 Sq. feet floor, with sufficient furniture and a computer.

Library

The college has centralized library with a rich collection of books fulfilling the needs of both the UG/ PG courses. The department library consists of 175 reference books and 17 projects written by the T.Y.B.A. restructuring students,under the guidance of the faculty. To improve the vocabulary and for the better understanding of the subject, the departmental library has ten dictionaries which give meanings of English, Urdu and Marathi words into Hindi.

Admission

Students are admitted to the special course in Hindi, as per their choice, based on the marks obtained at the last qualifying examination. The procedure of admission strictly follows the University and government guidelines. The eligibility criteria and other relevant information is provided to the students through college prospectus and website. A separate Admission Committee looks after the admission process.

Academic Program

The department offers a degree course (B.A. In Hindi) at Under-Graduate level while M.A. in Hindi at Post-Graduation level. The students can choose Hindi as a Special subject in the Second Year of the UG course.

Teaching

Along with the conventional methods of teaching,LCD,PPTs,Internet, CDs, Maps and Charts are used for effective teaching. Study tours are organized to provide practical knowledge to the students. For upgradation, open discussions and feedbacks are beneficial.

Learning

In addition to the classroom learning, study tours, library, internet,computers,seminars and guest lectures are the other means available in the department.

The continuous evaluation methods like tests,tutorials, group discussions, orals,students seminars, etc. are used for the internal assessment of the students.

Research

Recently, Research activities in the department are enhanced. One of the faculty members of the department has completed his M.Phil. while three faculty members are pursuing the degree of Ph.D. The faculty members are regularly involved in the publication and presentation of research papers. A National level seminar entitled “Bhartiya Loksahitya Swarup va Sankalpana” was organized by the department. In 2017, one of the faculty members, Prof. Khemnar D.K. edited a reference book entitled ‘Indian Folk Literature : Nature and Concept".

Other

One of the faculty members of the department acted as a Guest Lecturer to various colleges for promotion and spreading awareness of the National Language, Hindi.The rules of grammar of Devnagari Script were taught to the students of Guha orphanage. The students of the ‘Earn and Learn Scheme’ were guided to maintain cleanliness in the campus. They were also looked after whenever need arises.The students were encouraged to produce literature in Hindi for boosting their writing talent. The faculty members actively participate in the various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities conducted by the college and PRES.

The Department of History was established in the year 1971. Initially, History was taught as a general subject for the undergraduate classes. Specialization in History for the undergraduate course started in 1977. The post graduate course in History i.e MA (History) started in 1993. The department also runs a Foundation Course under the Restructuring program for FYBA students. In this course, students are provided with basic knowledge of social science subjects. The department offers a course, Mass Communication and Public Opinion for TYBA students under the C component of the Restructuring program. As a part of this course, students are given a project based on social issues. The department strives to increase students' awareness about the local history of the area. The department has organized two state level seminars for the benefit of students and teachers. Both the seminars were sponsored by the BCUD, SPPU- Pune.

Linkages

The department has collaboration with Modi Bhasha, Lipi Savardhan aani Sanshodhan Kendra, Pune for increasing Modi Script skills in students. The department had organized a five days Modi Script Course from 15th to 19th January 2014 and from 6th to 12th September 2018.Students,teachers and citizens have participated in these Courses.

Study Tours

Every year the department organizes study tours to increase students interest in History. Our students have visited historical places like Ajanta caves, Satvahana caves, Raigad Fort, Narayanpur,Dayamabad, etc.

Infrastructure

The department has a separate section with a cabin for its administration. There are separate classrooms for conducting the special and post-graduate lectures.

Departmental Library

There is a separate Departmental library available for students. It has 189 books, research journals, projects, CDs, DVDs and Audio books.

The Department of Marathi in PVP College was established in the year 1971. Marathi started taught at the general level from 1972. BA (Marathi) was introduced in the year 1973. Post graduate course i.e MA (Marathi) was started in the year 1992.It is also a subject for FYBCom and SYBSc, apart from the regular BA courses.

Apart from the regular University courses, the department runs few other courses like, Communication Skills in Marathi and Mass Communication Courses under the Restructuring Program. The UGCs Certificate Course in Journalism is also available for FYBA students.

The department is consistently developing its research activities. Dr C D Rudrakshe and Dr S B Chaudhari have completed PhD and are recognized research guides. Mrs S M Wakole is pursuing her Ph D research. So far Dr S B Chaudhari has completed two minor research projects. He has applied for a Major Research Project to the UGC. Dr C D Rudrakshe is working on a UGC minor research project. The faculty members have published total 28 research papers in the last five years.

The Department of Politics established in 1971. Politics is taught at general level since 1972 and at special level since 1978.The department has two qualified faculty members. The department of Politics has sufficient furniture and computer.It has a separate cabin of 80 sq.ft. floor area in Social Science Department. The department consists of reference books, journals and teaching aids like maps, charts, CDs etc.

The department organized seminars and lecture series to impart quality education. Our faculty members work as a project guide for mass communication under Restructuring program. Faculty members published 20 research papers and attended 15 workshops in the last 5 years.

The department of Philosophy is established in 1971. The first approved lecturer of the dept. was Prof. K.G. Dongre who worked from 1971 to 1976. Mr. S.M. Nirmal joined the dept in 1974 and retired in 2010. After his retirement, Prof. M. U. Patil has been teaching the subject. Currently 190 students are enrolled in the department for under graduate course.

The department is well equipped with ICT facilities. The department has infrastructural facilities with the departmental library having 208 texts and reference books, 3 charts, 15 portraits of great philosophers and 4 diagrams. The faculty of department actively involves in motivating students to participate in curricular, co curricular and extension activities.

The department of philosophy organized a two days State-level seminar on "Achievements of Philosophers and Social Reformers in the Transformation of Indian Societies in 19th and 20th Century" on 13th and 14th January 2017 in collaboration with History Department. The department also organized various activities under 'Special Guidance Scheme' for the weaker students under Board of Student Welfare. The department organized one day workshop on 'Value Education in the Syllabi' sponsored by the Board of Student Welfare, S. P. Pune University, Pune in 2017-18.

The department also conducts Value added course on "Value Education" for the under graduate students since 2012-13. The faculty also motivates students to actively Participate in the research activities. Mr. M.U. Patil registered for the Ph. D. in Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathawada University, Nanded. He has also Published 21 Research papers at national and international level so far and authored two books for 12 standard, named '12th Tarkashastra Margadarshika' and '12th Tattwadnyan Margadarshika'. Along with it, he also edited a book of research article entitled,"Achievements of Philosophers and Social Reformers in the Transformation of Indian Societies in 19th and 20th Century".
